Explaining Course Codes
Ontario Secondary School Course Codes are set by the Ontario Ministry of Eduction and can be quite confusing. Here is a quick guide to how they work using a sample of: MFM2P
The first three letters indicate the subject and title of the course.
MFM = M – “Mathematics” (subject), FM – “Foundations of Mathematics” (course title)
The fourth character indicates the grade:
1 = Grade 9
2 = Grade 10
3 = Grade 11
4 = Grade 12
The fifth letter indicates the level of study:
Grades 9
D and/or W = De-streamed
DE and/or WE = Advanced placement
L = Locally Developed
Grade 10
D = Academic
DE and/or WE = Advanced placement
P = Applied
L = Locally Developed
Grades 11 and 12
U = University
C = College
M = University/College
E = Workplace
Grades 9 to 12
O = Open level
